My year of trying to lead a more minimalistic lifestyle

Its that time of year where I start reflecting on how this year has gone, what I have achieved & what resolutions I have failed.

*This year I embraced the ethical clothing challenge  (which I failed 4 times over the course of this year). To which Im continuing this challenge into 2015 & including Kobe. I hope to only buy preloved clothing except the essentials like thermals & underwear. Everything else I shall try to source from markets, Ebay & op shops or I shall make it myself. If I do choose to buy new, it will be clothing that is not made in a sweatshop and shall be made with sustainable fabric.

*2015 is going to be the year of the handmade gifts. Where Im focusing on mindful gift giving of items that will be lovingly used (& not dumped in the trash days later) of items that I have either made myself, bought at a craft market (support the makers!!!) or D.I.Y craft projects for the kidlets as Im all about entertaining the kidlets creatively without the help of tv (although it stays on during meal times). Im sure this wont make us popular with some people who are expecting the lastest mass produced must have item at gift time but such is life & you cant please everyone.

*Although I did well about limiting what I brought into our tiny house in 2014. I didn't get rid of any clutter I had been hoarding (eh hello over-crowded garage your getting a big clean out!!!). So 2015 is all about paring back on possessions & also the bad food we eat. Luke & I binge on junkfood the moment Kobe's tucked into bed all nice & snug. Out comes the hidden chocolate stash, ice cream & corn chips. It would be awesome to limit our processed sugar intake & having a healthier diet.

*I joined a local Facebook group about saving money & budgeting where everyone shares their tips. I would like to get more involved into reducing food wastage & costs where we could share/barter our excess produce. The war on food wastage begins!

*Most importantly 2015 will be the year about chasing life experiences over the lastest must have fad or accessory. About living life at a slower pace where I can literally stop & smell the roses instead of racing from one thing to the next.

Wish me luck Im going to need it;)

How to have a rich but frugal christmas

Kobe & I went on the bus today with our neighbours to see Santa at a shopping centre. Where we were greeted by crowds of shoppers with trolleys packed to the brim with presents for loved ones. All I wanted to do was turn tail & get back on the bus home before I too got swallowed up in the consumerism of this festive season.

Strangely this Christmas Im a lot more chilled about it as I sticking to a more relaxed mindset of "Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones not spend lots on loved ones to prove how much you love them".

(Sidenote; how freaking cute is this retro burger bank I found at an op shop? It will be Kobes once he learns to respect his stuff & not break it carelessly. Cant wait til he fills it up with pocket money he has earnt to save for something special).

So I thought why not share my frugal tips of surviving on a budget during this festive season.
To keep costs down this time of year I follow these basic principles;

*Be organized, I jumped on the internet halfway thru November to order gifts so that they would arrive with plenty of time before Christmas.
*Go for mindful gifts that will be used as opposed to gimmicky gifts (you know those annoying ones that fart or swear etc) that everyone will laugh about when they open them only to ditch them days later once the novelty wears off.
*I hate shopping centres due to the large volume of customers. I feel suffocated & overwhelmed which would leave me to grab anything to buy just to get the frick out of there. If your like me then write a list & stick to it & don't go on an empty stomach (unless you really needed 4 bags of cookies... which are my weakness). If you dare, take cash & no bank cards, that way you resist any impulse purchases.
*Set a realistic budget which you can afford without relying on a credit card. Do you really want to spend January playing catch up paying off December purchases?
*Box up your unused clutter & sell it on Gumtree, Ebay or at a market stall. Put what you made towards your Christmas budget.
*Embrace seasonal produce, its cheaper.
*Share the load on Christmas day & everyone brings a platter. No one wants to be stuck in a hot kitchen all day doing all the cooking. Sharing is indeed being caring.
*Waste not what not. Why not regift anything you no longer need to someone who would actually use it? Cheeky sure but one less item in landfill.
*If you have a large family why not do chris cringle & everyone pull out a name out of a hat? We have done this for Lukes family the past couple years but sadly it got to the point where everyone just chose their own gift. So Im advocating for family time spent together as the gift this year. Afterall the best things in life are free such as quality time with loved ones.

I hope I didn't come across as the Grinch who stole the Christmas spirit but you don't need lots of stuff to have a fulfilled life:)

A kids christmas wishlist (minus the crap)

I have been more mindful on what comes into our house inconcern to the little one. So I prepared a kid friendly gift guide minus the crap stuff which may help other parents dealing with the same issues or any auntys or grandparents who might need a little help. This list is based on what will be used lovingly & not thrown out days/months later in our home.

1. For the outdoor grubby child who loves getting dirt in his finger nails (& drag it thru the house too). Im loving the Seedling kid friendly garden range which goes splendid with Dirtgirl seeds. Nothing like encouraging your child to be involved in the garden.

2. Instead of a product gift why not gift an experience? Zoo passes, aquarium passes, reptile park passes, or even playcentre passes would be super handy to any family.

3. For the kid that wants everything why not teach them the gift of caring for others? We have a tradition to take Kobe to the Kmart wishing tree every year to drop off a couple presents. I tell him "we are helping Santa with gifts for the children he might not have time to get to as he has a very big job delivering presents & we don't want any child to miss out".

4. Im quite proud of my mini-me recycler (except when he makes us check every freaking smelly bin when we are out in public) so this list cant be complete without Recycle books aimed for young children. Peppa pig "recycling fun", Charlie Lola "we are very good recyclers" & Don't throw it away are on the grandparents please buy Kobe gift wishlist.

5. Childrens music; I have just started catching glimpses of Kobe's impromptu dance routines to music:) Justine Clarke I like to sing he asks for daily, I secretly sing along also to Yo Gabba Gabba & anything Playschool related is sure to be a winner. Plus its so handy to drown out toddler tantrums with chirpy music on car trips...

6. Practical & functional you cant go past a pair of Birkenstocks. You can even get them upsized up to 2 sizes bigger (for an extra cost) when they outgrow them the following year.

7. You cant go wrong with craft stuff. We love the Crayola craft range in our house. The dry erase number cards are Kobe favourite drawing activity at present. The Seedling craft kits are pretty cute too.

8. And because I have to include one toy on the list it has to be the Trashpack range. Finally a freaking toy that my child will sit & play with for over 10 minutes. Hallelujah!!! I was organized enough to jump on Ebay earlier this month to buy mint condition preloved Trashpack stuff for a bargain.

Happy Tuesday friends!

The gift of giving back

With Christmas fast approaching (can you believe its less than a month now, crazy!!!) its easy to get caught up in the hoopla that is the circus surrounding it. That's why we like to take a step back & put some focus on helping those going thru a hard time. Every financial year Luke & I choose a couple charitys to sponsor; last year it was Oxfam, Salvation Army, Ovarian cancer research & Red Cross.

I thought I would highlight a few more charities (we are also personally helping this financial year) who could use a very welcome helping hand; Kmart wishing tree (we do this every year with Kobe, I just have to make sure he doesn't sneakily open the gifts before we donate them), Brain foundation, Motor neurone disease, Princess Margaret hospitalFoodbank (I shall be collecting packaged & tin food soon so if your Perthbound & would like to help feel free to reach out & get in contact:))

Every $ is vital. No amount too small. If you aren't in a position to donate $, volunteers are always in shortage or try holding a fundraiser/food drive to show your support:)

Where to find fabulous preloved clothing in Perth

I like to pride myself on being frugal when dressing myself. (I also like bright patterned things if you cant tell:)). So I thought it would be nice to share my tips on where to shop for fabulous preloved clothing.

*Vintage markets are a mecca of carefully selected used clothing, my favourite include Polkadot vintage markets, the vintage clothing stalls at the fringe markets & Bindaring clothing sale.

*Op shops like Salvation army, Anglicare, RSPCA stores, Good Sammys, Red cross shops are a goldmine if your prepared to dig for a treasure. Check this site incase I missed any. My personal fave is Rags to riches. Its a bit junkier than other op shops but I have walked away with Lisa Ho & Cue for less than $10:)

*Garage sales & markets. Pencil in Melville & Belmont markets if your up early enough on a Sunday morning.

*Ebay, Gumtree & Facebook selling groups.

Happy thrifting!

Stripe dress/ 4 ways

I picked up this Cotton on dress from the local op shop the other week, with tags on & all. I love a stripe & I find this cut quite flattering plus its stretchy material so no ironing. Yippee!!! I enjoyed wearing it so much I may of overdone it in the first week & sneakily wore it a few different ways before I reluctantly put it in the laundry pile.

Look 1 (above): I teamed it with a white Kookai vest that's been collecting dust since my office days. Those metallic harriet slides I broke my nothing new 2014 clothing challenge for. In my defence, I wear them pretty much every 2nd day.

Look 2: Still keeping it simple I added a felt hat my lovely sister bought me back from a travelling trip, borrowed some of her chunky rings & slipped on these quirky wedge shoes that cost me less than $10 at the markets. This outfit cost me around $16. I like to shop frugally.

Look 3: Nothing like channelling French sheek with the stripe dress & black raffia hat (FYI this hat  is really annoying & always slips off, I think its designed for the races like an alternative to the fascinator). Minimal accessories again with a thrifted Samantha Wills anchor necklace, round glasses & my trusty big tote bag that fits all my bits & bobs in.

Look 4: My little sidekick joined me for this photo shoot, I couldn't decide whether to wear the harriet slides again or some white canvas shoes (which Im holding). The lil one made the decision by wearing the harriet ones lol. I left the anchor necklace on & added some cat eye sunnies & wrapped a acid wash denim jacket around my waist. I also think a green anorak (which I don't own) would look fabulous with this stripe dress.

This space

Its coming up to a year since I started this space. I originally started this space to promote a vintage clothes business however over the days, months its been trying to find any fabulous vintage pieces to sell at a fair price to reflect time spent; sourcing pristine stock, cleaning, photographing, editing, uploading, answering queries & posting. Not to mention storage in a tiny house where there is no spare room & mums guilt of leaving kobe under someones elses care while I trollop off to search for items & mostly come home empty handed. I don't want to miss the small moments of him growing up so I happy to be at home with him for the time present & focus on being the best mum I can be.

So instead Im gravitating more (on what I already had been doing but adding more depth) on things I rather enjoy like creating, & sewing (keep an eye out on upcoming things I made giveaways), motherhood, the ongoing quest on green living (& the failures too), travel adventures, promoting Perth, a few budget tips on one income families & fashion tidbits.

So that's my plans for this space plus getting a bit of a website image update. I will still be selling some of my personal clothing so I will keep you posted on any wardrobe cleanouts as Im doing a declutter before Christmas.

Our crafty Halloween

I wasn't going to do anything for Halloween this year but then my neighbour invited us with her & kids to go trick or treating. So I then decided we really must do something to celebrate Kobe's first time trick or treating. I blew up a bunch of balloons (some to entertain Kobe purely so I could draw (uninterrupted) ghosts on the others) & hang them up. Sadly they didn't last long & popped quite quickly.

The lil one loves painting with black paint (mainly because he gets it happily everywhere including all over the white shower tiles at bath time). So naturally we upcycled some toilet rolls to turn into bat door hangers.

A bit of old fashioned cross stitching on a candy bag (which I made years ago)  & the cutest mini pumpkins ever. I also made some monster pops which I posted on Instagram.

Some last minute Yo Gabba Gabba masks sewing. "Toodee" & "Foofa" wish you all a happy & safe Halloween filled with candy & chocolate.

Beautiful ethical fashion

When I think of eco clothing, shapeless hemp sack dresses come to mind but not anymore!!! Going green never looked so damn fine with these pieces. You can sleep well wearing any of these knowing they promote sustainable or ethical choices.

1.I found this lovely dress in linen which according to this post is the strongest vegetable fiber & also the flax plant in which it is derived flourishes in poor soil (requiring the bearest if any of fertilizer). (The mama who established the Bohemian traders online shop also has the sweetest blog).

2.Ethical fashion iniative joined forces with Karen Walker eyewear for Visible 2014 campaign. African artisans involved in the manufacture were also photographed in the campaign shoot. Perfection!

3.Bhalo took me by surprise. I heart their stance on incorporating fair trade into their business, not to mention how truly beautifully designed the clothes are. Their Bangladesh workshops even has a community garden & onsite composting. Those sweet shorts never looked sweeter & are even made via a hand loom which require no electricity.

4.I have been a longtime fan of Gorman. I refuse to bin the 2 skivvys I forgot to store away in Summer one year so the moths ate tiny holes in them, they are still good to layer under loose dresses in the cold months for many many years to come. My current fave of their organic cotton jersey range is this dot t-shirt. You can read their sustainable philosopy here. I thought it was interesting to note that they sometimes choose a recycled sythetic over organic cotton as a more viable sustainable option.

5. I newly stumbled across Freckled Duck online shop whose niche caters to sweatshop free, organic cotton for children.

I cant seem to find any decent looking (yes shallow I know) vegan shoes.

Currently

Obsessing about anything fruit related. Im crazy in love with these kitsch 70's pineapple & strawberry cookie containers I thrifted at the markets (& the juice just tastes so good plus has no added sugar in it).
Baking braided fruit bread. Eh yeah I need more practice...
Discovered Manning road markets. A great place to stock up on local produce. I vouch for the juice stall.
Grateful that Kobe mostly behaved while Luke was away camping for 3 days.
Failing decluttering. I seem to be attached to everything...
Watching Moonrise Kingdom. Surprisingly refreshing & I thought it was funny.
Realizing I cant gossip infront of Kobe. Don't want him innocently repeating my secrets lol.
Excited my sister is back for a month from her travels. Been way too long.
Trialling the no poo hair experiment for a month. Im on day 7.
Struggling to find vegan shoes (that are also pretty...).
Upset that its going to rain this weekend. Im a sunshine gal.
Laughing over the lil ones new mantra; "reduce, renew, recycle". He repeats it while playing the "bin man" game.

Happy Thursday friends!

DIY: Pineapple zip bag

Lately I cant get enough of craft projects, something to stimulate my creative juices. Plus I wanted to practice sewing zippers so I thought why not make something useful like a funky zip bag/pouch.

A few things I used; leftover denim fabric, scrap retro fabric offcuts, ribbon, metallic embroidery thread & yarn, zip, thread, metallic sewing machine needles, scissors, thread, sewing machine zipper foot & sewing machine.

1. First of all I measured the halfway mark of the fabric then positioned the top of the pineapple ribbon, pinned & sewed. As I used metallic ribbon as the "pineapple top" I used the metallic thread to sew it & had to swap sewing machine needles to the metallic needles.

2. Next I did a rough lay on where I was going to sew the yarn on the "pineapple". I cut out a pineapple shape & zigzagged the yarn on in lines. I then pinned the pineapple on the denim & zigzagged around the edges to secure it onto the denim. I sewed all this with the metallic embroidery thread (which can be a bugger to sew with as it frays every now & then but it looks pretty).

3. After swapping machine needles back to the normal one & changing machine feet to the zipper foot. I sewed a zipper in. (I didn't iron or interface the zip thou as in the instructions...).

4. I have zero patience for setting up an overlocker, changing threads then working out the correct thread tension to suit the fabric. So the french seam was perfect for the zip bag. The seams were a bit bulky as I used denim but looked very neat once sewn. I sewed the sides first then the bottom.

Tada! I was originally going to use this bag to store electronic stuff but made it a tiny bit too small (bugger) so I will be using it for a library book bag for when Kobe & I go on our weekly visit.

Happy Friday friends!

Rainy day craft projects for toddlers

And just when I was super excited about all the glorious sunshine, the weather gods throw me a dreary rainy day = cabin fever alert. Those who know me know I have a child that doesn't entertain himself, he prefers the company of someone to play with so I quipped together some craft activities that will surely be entertaining us today. The added bonus is we have daddy with us today (hooray soccer season is over:)).

We made this camera out of an empty cracker cardboard box & paper cup which the little one enjoyed painting black (his favourite color most days). He also enjoyed painting his whole arm & legs too... I glued gun on the cup "lens" to the cracker box "camera" base along with some vintage buttons for the camera button & view box plus a ribbon strap (leftover from a gift).

I was lucky enough to buy this handmade tiger mask at the markets for all of 50 cents. This one is made out of fabric but we will be making a few more out of cardboard which was destined for the recycle bin. Do you know you can make your own paint out of this recipe?

Random artwork (the ones above are a dragon & Kobe did rain drops on the bottom picture I think) made out of scavenged bits of nature.

Garden "flowers". I was originally going to make these out of egg cartons (cut out singularly) but then thought they would disintegrate way too quickly so I used the lids off McDonalds sundaes Luke & I treated ourselves to when Kobe was asleep. Win win for all. Kobe enjoyed the painting while I did the cutting of the petals & glueing the pom pom & stick base on.

And because it wouldn't be right without a rubbish bin themed project for the rubbish bin loving boy. We cut out pictures of "recycling" which Kobe glued with a gluestick onto a piece of cardboard. Then I made the bin picture. I took them to Officeworks to get them laminated, cut them up, glue gunned the Velcro on & tada a "recycle themed rubbish bin game" the lil one can choose what he wants to recycle. I also want to make a smelly rubbish bin & donation bin.

Bits & pieces

Growing teeny tiny beetroot, after months this is the biggest beetroot I have grown:( Im happy that grapes are started to grow on our vines, I may have better luck...
Sewing thermal lined curtains for the loungeroom. Hoping I can finish on the weekend.
Watching crash test mummies & daddies about first time parents & how they are coping. So damn good!!!
Fighting off a friggin virus. Woe is me. Im a real sour cow at the moment so steer clear lol.
Invested in a Gro sleep trainer clock. Its been a week & it has been a real struggle to get the lil one to stay in his bed to 5.30am. (He wakes at 4.45am every darn day?!?). I have to go & stay in his room with him for 45 minutes for him to stay (he whines the whole 45 minutes non stop).
Wanting to make my own laundry detergent however cant seem to track down Borax. Can anyone recommend where to buy it in Perth?
Enjoying watching Luke & Kobe sing "wheels on the bus" (completely out of tune but it is the cutest thing ever!!!)
Pulling my hair out over toilets filled with unravelled toilet paper by a sneaky lil toddler. Arrgh!!!
Failing cutting down on plastics by relying on the squeezy yoghurt tubes for Kobe way more than I like to admit.
Breaking my buying nothing new (clothing) 2014 resolution by buying these delightful metallic slides from Country Road. My one treat of the year.
Grateful to my friend Haelee for providing me with handy information about healthy eating regarding portion sizes for children. Its been an ongoing battle to coax Kobe to accepting healthy food over anything coated in sugar. I just don't want him having rotten teeth like I did as a child. Now to pass it on to Kobe's grandparents...

Happy Friday friends!

Street style stalking

If its one show of the Telstra Perth fashion show I had to squirrel away pennies to save for a ticket its the closing show which was Zhivago this year. You are guaranteed the fashion savvy crowd bring their A game when choosing their outfits. That & the fact you catch glimpses of the local celebrities, hello Bree Maddox (glowing with baby bump), Ae'lkemi designer Alvin Fernandez, Sam Barnett & entrepreneur Frank Cintamani (ok he is Singapore based but gets my credit as he launched a fashion week in Asia). Sadly I was too shy to ask to snap photos of them but I did manage to sneakily take photos of some of the crowd.

My personal favourite of the night, so modern & sheek. We should be friends lol.

The talent behind Hello Parry (Sandra Lai) & local blogger (Whats the goh) Andrea Goh. Few people can get away with that blunt fringe.

This royal blue ensemble screams Zhivago with the low cut front & big shoulders.

Tulip festival

Instead of our usual playdate/friends social outing I opted for some one on one special time with Kobe & decided the tulip festival would be a perfect outing on a spectacular sunny day. We originally planned to go to the Yates springtime tulip festival last Sunday with a friend but arrived shortly before lunch & was stuck in the peak hour traffic for over half hour that we decided to turn around & come back another day. This weekend marks the last days of the festival so I recommend you come early (opening time) to be guaranteed a car park & entry. The park is breathtakingly gorgeous & located in the Roleystone hills surrounded by trees.

The tulip displays are set up in the middle of the park, accompanied by a waterfall feature & some stalls behind it. As your not allowed to stampede thru the tulips (obviously, thou some people still did to get a winning photo) there was one spot where there was logs situated between 2 tulip beds perfect for photo ops. The only downer was it was so busy, you need to be quick & trying to rush a super shy child to smile at the camera when he was overwhelmed by strangers standing nearby was tricky. I had to made do with my promise if he sat still so I could take a photo I would let him check the feral bins nearby (its his embarassing thing he loves to do & Im pretty sure he aint giving it up anytime soon).

We stopped by the apple stall & dutch food stall to top up on picnic food. The sweet apple juice was freshly squeezed from granny smith apples & I was shocked but happy to learn that they had no added sugar in them. After a lingering lazy picnic by the front pond area, we left our picnic stuff unattended & boarded the mini train. For the cost of a couple of gold coins it takes you on a brief trip around the park which is so handy when you have sore legs & just don't have the strength to carry a tired toddler uphill to explore the rest of the park. While I marvelled at the range of flowers in bloom that I spied from my seat on the mini train, the lil one squealed with delight on seeing any park bins. Win win.
If flowers & relaxing surrounded by nature is your thing then don't miss this. Go see explore.

In the now

In the now;
Sewing kids felt flower headbands & felt cameras.
Reading Insurgent. Im finally on the Divergent bandwagon.
Failing patience, finding it hard with negotiating with a headstrong 3 year old.
Discovering bagels are absolutely delicious!!!
Craving the lamb ribs at Bread in Common.
Crying whilst watching If I stay. Did someone cut onion in the movie theatre?!?
Laughing over some photos my friend Clare showed me, made my day/week.
Trying to reduce (& maintain) our weekly garbage wastage. For the second week we are down to 3 small garbage bags a week.
Wanting to organize a catch up between a group of friends to bring stuff they no longer need which can be shared within the group. I cant stop thinking about unwanted things going into landfill & how I can help reduce this.
Interested in knowing if anyone has used soap nuts instead of laundry detergent?
Looking forward to a Super Mario themed dress up night & the PFF Zhivago fashion show.
Excited that Kobe wants to learn how to write his name. Its the teaching bit that is the hard bit for me.
Cooking eggy fried rice, tuna salmon fish cakes & soy pork.
Grateful for friends like Louie & Kaysey. 2 kind sweet gals who are so supportive!!!

Spring Inspiration

Images 1. Backpack/ Sportsgirl 2. Vintage floral dress/ MOKASvintagemelange on Etsy
3. My little French kitchen cookbook by Rachel Khoo/ Book depository 4. Vintage floral pussybow blouse/ Asecondhandlife on Ebay 5. Plant party favours/ A party boutique on Instagram.

When I think of Spring I think of florals. Here is my round up of my favourite things that inspire me at the moment. If you are fond of the sunflower backpack its on sale. Doesn't the sweet vintage dress make you want to run thru a field of flowers? I recently borrowed out My little French kitchen cookbook from the library, I am making the goats cheese, strawberry (they are so cheap at the moment!) & cucumber millefeuilles tomorrow. Who doesn't like a sweet bow on a floaty blouse? Im adoring the new take on the party bags with plants inside each bag, genius!
What are you lusting after at the moment?
