DIY: Kids chicken costume

I bought some fairy wings from the op shop for $1 & thought I would use them in an upcycling project. Having a boy who has gets upset with anything he thinks is "girls" not boys. (He even got upset when he opened the Woolworths dominoes to find a girl character...). I had to use a bit of imagination on what sort of wings to make. Naturally with Easter coming up (I made it before Easter & have just been slow on uploading this post) I thought why not make some chicken wings & a mask & he can wear it for the egg hunt. I had some of this fringing fabric left from when I made my niece's year 7 graduation dress (which she couldn't wear as her mum accidentally washed the dress in bleach beforehand...).

I couldn't help but make myself a matching felt mask. The dress up box is getting mighty full...

1. I used the wire from the fairy wings, some beige elastic, felt, fringe fabric, a feather & some gold fabric (for the beak).
2. The fringing fabric was a nightmare to sew, it was so slippery. I draped it over the wing wire so that it covered back & front.
3. I then pinned it once it was flat & handsewed around the top & bottom of the wire to secure the fabric. I trimmed the excess fabric from the edge but left about a 1cm.
4. I measured enough felt fabric to cover the wire edge & cut it into long strips which I then handsewed around the edge.
5. I had to make something to attach the wings together & also hold the arm straps. So I made a felt square (double sided for extra strength).

And tada...

I adore how the wings & mask turned out!

Ok so the lil one didn't want to put the chicken mask over his eyes but was happy to wear it as a headband. He was more than happy to wear it as he fluttered around Easter egg hunting:)

Happy Wednesday friends!
